FOR JOSEPHINE, MOSAICLAB IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE
I like working for a values-based organisation that asks real questions and pushes for stronger levels of influence from participants in engagement processes.
JOSEPHINE BELIEVES
That people have more power than they realise! I believe in the strength that comes from a group that is being supported to realise their purpose. I strongly believe that participation by people in decisions that affect them that is well designed and supported by the right people strengthens our democracy.
I believe it’s important to bring curiosity into every experience we have so that we are always learning and never staying still. I believe in bringing community back into an increasingly fragmented social sphere where we are in dialogue with each other, not just jumping on each other with our untested opinions. I believe that being in dialogue is increasingly needed as we head towards tackling humanities’ most wicked challenges.
JOSEPHINE IS KNOWN FOR
Being pragmatic, creative, fun and energised! I have worked across many industries and have a deep passion for nature. I love trying new techniques and processes and bringing these to support the team.
Outside of work, Josephine is known for making elaborate meals.
JOSEPHINE KNEW THIS WAS HER CALLING WHEN
A common thread of many of my roles has been engagement and facilitation – my first facilitation experience was when I was thrown in the deep end as a community development advisor for Auckland City Council, running a training program on business planning! I had no idea what I was doing, and my boss said to me: ‘Jo - you don’t need to know all of the answers – just draw out the wisdom in the room!’. Unbeknownst to me, that was my first experience of one of the core values of facilitation. In this role I also did my Certificate in Public Participation in 2005 and was introduced to the IAP2 spectrum under Viv Twyford, who came all the way to Auckland from Australia to train us.
As a sustainability engagement professional for nearly 10 years, I used facilitation skills often. I found they were a great community building skill and helped to support the many workshops I ran as a facilitator of the Enviroschools program. I found that using facilitation skills helped to get more bang for your buck too when you worked in seriously under resourced non-profits!
My first role in Melbourne was as a stakeholder engagement coordinator for a state government department in waste management – it was whilst doing this role that I worked with many professional facilitators and started honing my own skills in designing consultation and facilitated processes. Keith Greaves had been a huge inspiration for me when I was working in the waste engagement space especially around dealing with tricky stakeholders and making processes collaborative but also fun! After training formally with the Groupwork Institute I found a role at MosaicLab.
JOSEPHINE LOVES ...
Seeing the transformative effect of great facilitation - for participants, clients, organisations and for project outcomes.
Her current passion is working with online facilitation tools – something that she has been able to focus on given the move to online everything during COVID!
SOMETHING YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT JOSEPHINE
Part of one of my sustainability jobs was project managing the installation of waterless urinals in primary schools!
I was also once the Student President at Lincoln University in Canterbury.
